Lecture: Battle Of Mackie's Mill
Saturday, January 28 at 1:30 p.m. at the Isle of Wight County Museum, 103 Main Street in downtown Smithfield
This lecture will commemorate the 236th anniversary of the American Revolution's Mackie’s Mill engagement, the January 16, 1781, skirmish between local militia and Benedict Arnold’s forces.
Local historian Rob Friar and special guest Col. Josiah Parker, Isle of Wight County resident and U.S. House of Representatives member from 1789 to 1801, will review the history leading up to the Mackie’s Mill engagement of 1781 and the details surrounding local militia’s clash with Gen. Benedict Arnold’s forces at this site.
Interpreting local history, the museum’s exhibits include prehistoric fossils, Native American and Colonial artifacts, a country store and the museum’s most notable artifact - the world’s oldest, edible cured ham. The 1902 pork product exemplifies the patented Smithfield curing process. Admission is $2 for adults.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The museum is closed New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and staff in-service day.
