Plan now to attend the chamber's Annual Meeting and Awards reception on Friday, September 9, 6pm, in the clubhouse at Cypress Creek Golfers Club.

In addition to celebrating the installation of its new officers -- Chairman Mike Adams, Vice Chair Martha Russ and Treasurer Bob Moore Jr. -- the chamber will present its annual Business of the Year award, the Grace Keen Distinguished Community Service Award, and Teacher of the Year.

Both major party candidates hoping to represent Isle of Wight County in Congress next year have RSVPed for the Awards Reception.

U.S. Congressman Robert "Bobby" Scott (D) and challenger Marty Williams (R) are vying to represent Virginia's 3rd congressional district in the November 8 election. (Isle of Wight, currently in the 4th district, will be included in the 3rd next year due to a realignment of Virginia's congressional map.) Williams is a retired Chesapeake Police Sergeant and char of the city's planning commission. Rep. Scott is serving his twelfth term in Congress, and previously served in the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates.

While the Awards Reception is not a political event and the chamber of commerce does not endorse candidates, here is an opportunity to meet and talk informally with both candidates.

New Paul D. Camp Community College President Dr. Daniel Lufkin and new County Administrator Randy Keaton also plan to be on hand at the reception.

Wharf Hill Brewing Co. has been named the Business of the Year for 2016. Wharf Hill Brewing has helped to invigorate downtown Smithfield, attracting a younger audience, increasing the availability of casual dining, and bringing foot traffic into downtown in the evenings. Wharf Hill Brewing has also been supportive of many community organizations such as the library, Arts League and chamber of commerce.

The Grace Keen Distinguished Service Award will be presented to two recipients:

Jeff Black, a resident of Smithfield, has been the local supervisor for Dominion/Virginia Power in this area for over thirty years. Jeff comes out, rain, shine, snow or blow to ensure power is restored as soon as possible for businesses and residents. He goes about his job in a very unassuming manner, never asking for thanks and praise.

Community Harvest Outreach in Windsor is a non-profit organization, led by Laequinla Hunter and Rev. Ernest Hunter of God's Anointed Touch Ministries, that for the past seven years has provided for the basic needs of the underprivileged in the community including food and clothing to those in need through the clothes closet and food pantry services. Their goal is to reduce malnutrition in the most vulnerable: children and the elderly and to prevent illnesses due to improper clothing and lack of food. CHO also assists Windsor Police with its annual Christmas toy drive.

We will also recognize the Teacher of the Year, William Flythe, Jr., math teacher at Georgie Tyler Middle School in Windsor.
